I finally moved my chicken crate into the house.
This is where it sits.
I didn't paint it.
Or put a glass top on it.
I thought that might be a little like
"gilding the lily".
Or trying to "make a silk purse from a sow's ear."
Pick your metaphor.
But~
I'm not implying that I don't love my chicken crate.
I do love my chicken crate.
It's just that it is what it is.
A crate once used to haul poultry.
(And that has been left out in the weather for a little too long.)
I did put casters on it.
Doesn't it look old?
You'll laugh when I show you where I got them.
I took them off this old travel bag.
The zipper was broken, and there was paint on the handle.
(That could have been my fault. I have been known for a few incidences of indiscriminate paint spreading.)
They were fastened to the suitcase with these little brads. I bent their tops and pulled them out.
(OK, I bent the top on one and pulled it out. The rest proved to be, well, really HARD. My husband did the other 3)

Then I painted them all with this.

I think it does a pretty convincing job.
Then I just used some small screws and fastened them in place.
(I did do that part myself.)
(I did do that part myself.)
They make it easier to move the crate when we sweep the floor.
Which we do, on occasion.
I think it makes a fine coffee table.
And you can't beat the fact that it was
FREE!

I like it without the glass. It looks so cool. That's so funny about the casters. I thought about doing that with a suitcase we just threw away but was too lazy to do it.
Btw, where did you get the big burlap pillow? It looks great against the white.
I think it's perfect...as is. And I love your casters!:)
Hilarious!! I'll be saving the casters on all the torn duffel bags up in the attic now. The crate does look good. I'd probably be dropping things in between the slats, so I think I would have to opt for glass. I'm messy like that. You are just so clever, Suzanne!

Very cool, I love it! Raping an old beat-up suitcase of the casters is a brilliant idea! I'll be keeping my eye open at garage sales for some cheap (or even better... free) ones!

I LOVE it just as is. The casters are a fantastic idea!
Love what you did with your chicken crate. I also have one, but looks different. Thinking of making mine into a display for bath towels.
XO,
Valerie
oh so farmhouse cool! i have 2 of these that i've wanted to make a coffee table with...love it.
judi ;)
You are so funny...I am guilty right now of spreading a little red paint.
The porch wicker needed a spruce up! Love the chicken crate!!
Love it! I sweep my floor on occasion, too, but only special occasions. :)
I love your chicken crate. I have been looking for one for years. My husband's grandfather owned a hatchery and sold chickens and coops all over the country. When the old warehouse was cleared out there were several of those sitting around and before I could snatch one (or two....or three) they were disposed of....I didn't know whether to be mad or cry. I think I did both. I haven't run across any of them anywhere. Thanks for the memory. Signing up as your newest follower. Diana
I want a chicken crate!!! I love it! I didn't know that they were so popular, but I certainly see why.
It makes the cutest coffee table ever and the castors look great! Your couch looks pretty nice too. I would love a couch like that but with two chocolate labs, it ain't gonna happen.
I love it as a coffee table! I looks great with the wheels too. You are so smart to rip them off the old luggage. My coop, or whatever it is, is being used as a coffee table too. I'm hoping it will fit on the wall of the bath when its done.
The coop table is so perfect against the white sofa and wood floors. I love this look!
I think the chicken crate is the perfect contrast to your lovely sofa and smooth floors too. That was my first thought as well. Second thought, cool wheels aged in a very clever way. I'm still travelling, but trying to keep up! I say "no" to the glass top too.
That is so neat! I love it!!
It looks great! I love that you recycled EVERYTHING!
It's so unexpected that it looks perfect as a coffee table!

This is so cool. I'm afraid the kids would destroy it within minutes, but I will put it in my "when the kids get older" folder!
i think this looks awesome! i love how you have the room set up, and that big pillow is awesome! the fact that the crate hauled chickens to their final destination is just part of the charm, right? ;)
Positively wonderful!
It is awesome!! I dont blame you for repurposing the casters, those things can get pricey!
Great coffee table and I love the way you think, using those castors off the old suitcase, perfect! Oh and that pillow is flippin Awesome!
