Most of the time, I have no clear reasons for collecting something.
I just like whatever it is.
But I have one collection that's different.
It all started with
that cup on the far right.
I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but it's a slightly different blue than the other two. The design isn't a perfect match, either.
It was made by Taylor, Smith &; Taylor, and the others were made by Homer Laughlin.
My grandma gave me the one made by T.S.T.
She told me it was part of a set of six that she received as a wedding present. They were "freebies" that were put in boxes of Quaker Oats, and someone had saved 6 matching custard cups and gave them to my grandma and grandpa when they were married.
I thought that was sweet~that someone would patiently collect these so they could give someone a nice gift.
I found out, when I was looking for larger pieces to go with my custard cups, that you can only get small pieces in turquoise.
So I bought a few more pieces, then discovered that I could get larger pieces in yellow.
(The larger pieces that I have were all made by Homer Laughlin, and I've been told they were the precursor to Fiesta Ware.)
Platters,
Bowls,
Pie plates, casserole dishes, jars with lids, and little ramekins with handles.
I went a little crazy collecting for awhile.
I like thinking about who had owned them before me, and I sometimes wonder if maybe they were originally a wedding present.
That's what's hooked me.
That's what's hooked me.
All these pieces were well used when I got them, and I use all of them.
Dinner plates have been hard to find.
(probably because they got dropped a lot. I once dropped a stack of 12 stoneware plates and broke every single one of them, so I can see how plates would be scarce.)
They do exist, though, so I'm still looking.
What do you collect, and why?

Oh I love your dishes. I could have hundreds of dishes if I let myself. LOL I used to collect LuRay dishes. I had them in all the sweet pastel hues that were issued. Then I pared those down to just the blue ones...lol...and I gave those to my daughter about 2 years ago. I guess my biggest collection is Santas. I have MANY! Don't ask-it's embarassing! I haul them all out the day after Thanksgiving and clear off a big bookshelf to display them. Seriously, it's a sickness, isn't it? lol Thanks for sharing your collection. My Mother had some of those custard cups when I was little. Diana
This post made me remember that I have a collection of these dishes tucked away and now I need to get them out! I have a "thing" for dishes and my sweet hubby enables me. :) I've collected Fiestaware since the 80's and use it daily and just LOVE it. I still love adding to my collection even though its grown so enormous. It just makes me smile!
I love things with a history. I love that you started the blue cup collection with your grandma's.
Your dishes are very pretty. I don't have a yellow set yet. I just LOVE pretty dishes. I wouldn't say I collect them...because I use them all the time, does that make sense? I have five sets of dishes that I LOVE and use on a regular basis. When people come over to my house for lunch or dinner, they'll say things like, the kids are going to eat on these plates too? or, are you going to use THOSE dishes....as if they were made of gold and should not be used. I am very careful with them, though.
so pretty suzanne... And to answer your question... I collect WAY TO MUCH "STUFF"!!!
Your dishes are gorgeous!
Currently, my only collections are my bears, and nativities. I've only just begun doing more deorating/thrifting/antiquing, so once I develop my own style version of things, I'm sure I will find something else I will be on the lookout for.
There's some awesomeness. Yep. I collect um, birds, and small white pitchers. But I'm done with those for now...I've run outta places to put em. :)
Great, now I have to start searching for these as well. Great story, I collected tea cups for a while, now on the hunt for old linens and blue jars.
Those dishes are sooo pretty - especially the blue. I love reading about the history behind dishes, so thanks for posting. I collected Johnson Brothers Old English plates (they are a set of 6) and have them in my dining room. You can read about them here: http://gracie-senseandsimplicity.blogspot.com/2010/03/our-dining-room.html
What a lovely collection! Love the colors, too!

What a beautiful collection. Love those little blue dishes. Nice to have a collection that can be used and really enjoyed.
My latest collecting obsession is vintage cameras. I've picked up 10 of them since the beginning of the year. Some of them actually work, and my nephew has loaded them with film for me to play.
Hi there,
I collect dishes too, that and magazines are my "problem"! I have several sets of Homer Laughlin, but only a few of these - they are "Ovenware" and I don't think the set ever included dinner plates. There is a book you can buy that may tell you, I've included an Amazon link:

Beautiful blog you have, love it...
