I've been seeing some birch decor lately, and I really like it.
For instance~this from
and this from
I think this
would be fun for spring.

But I don't have a birch tree, and I have to wonder why. Why didn't I realize, 20 years ago, that I would some day want to do a project like this and plant a dang birch
tree?
I reviewed my options.
I think a crazy lady sawing the branches off of birch trees in the park might be frowned upon.
Asking random neighbors to saw off a branch for me seemed a little off, too.
I'm not about to buy a birch branch.
But when I was visiting my mom and dad, I noticed that their neighbors hadn't thrown out all debris from their fall clean up.
They had birch branches!
(I did ask them before I grabbed them and ran laughing like...well, a crazy lady.)
I wanted to make something simple out of them. Candle holders!
First, I cut the branch into random lengths.
Then, because our drill has been decommissioned, I used my Dremel to hollow out spaces for the candles to go.
Be sure to wear gloves when using a Dremel~it's like a dentist's drill and could do some real damage very fast.

(It almost looks like I'm using it, doesn't it? I did, but
not for the photo. Too much sawdust was flying around to get a really good picture.)

Then I used the sanding attachment to smooth out the holes.
(Again, no picture. Sawdust.)
Once the messy work was done, it was on to the fun stuff.

I hot glued the candle holders to a white enamel platter I got at a flea market a few weeks ago.
I put some gold berries around the base of the candle holders for some bling.
(I got them on clearance at Micheal's last year after Christmas.)
I had a bunch of white tapers I got at an estate sale, and I melted some wax in the holes so the candles would stick and not fall over. (Falling lit candles. Huge fire hazard.)
should we ever want to eat by candlelight.
(It could happen.)
I like how they turned out.
Rustic, but just enough glitz for me.

If you have some bigger branches, pillar candles would look nice, too.
My branches were too narrow for that.
This was a really easy project.
Not much skill and absolutely NO money was required since I had everything on hand.
Thanks for reading!

WEll aren't you a genius? Yes. you are. We have no birch around here getting trimmed either. Ah well.
I'm hoping to make some twine words this week for some Christmas decor for the kitchen...I'll let you know how it goes. If I write 'fail' with twine, that will give you a hint. :)
It makes a wonderful impact. ANOTHER amazing project. YOU ROCK!!! I've got the Boardwalk Bragfest going on today -- a great opportunity to do a bit of bragging (as though you needed an opportunity - haha). This project is a keeper!
Your candle holder turned out really pretty.
Great Job !
Sharon
I love it - free and fabulous! I have a thing for birch as well.
That is so beautiful Suzanne, love the silver you used to decorate them. It reminds me of that movie with the Ice Witch, Chronicles of Narnia:

how cute is that!?! Fabulous job. I'm so envious, not a birch tree in sight. Anywhere. They must like cooler climates.
those are beautiful. i love how elegant they look with the tapers. i wish i had some birch trees around here. there are a few, but they are not common, so when i see one i always stop to appreciate it for a minute.
Beautiful!!
This turned out beautifully. I love the added bling with the gold berries.
Suzanne- Well, first of all- Thank the good Lord that you weren't arrested for stealing branches...or cutting them down in a park. Why is it that when we get that "urge" we must, we must, we must increase our bust..oh..wait..that's the OLDER saying. Here's the one for crafters... We must...we must...we must create some dust!
These turned out great..dusty work and all! I love it - simple, functional and pretty! Hugs-Diana

So pretty...rustic and elegant at the same time...
They turned out fabulous! I love the rustic feel. Birch is just so beautiful. Actually fall cleanup is a great time to find all kinds of branches for projects. Great find Suzanne.
Love this project. Great idea. Congrats on winning the DIY monthly contest.
You are so clever and creative. I bet we see this in the pottery barn catalog soon. :)

I LOVE this! I have always loved birch branch candle holders that I see in mags but yours are way better!
I thought i commented on these gorgeous candle holders but I guess I didn't! I really love these Suzanne. I love birch, first of all! These are beautiful and natural. And you make it look almost easy. :) Now I want some!
I just love this! What a great find and the whole vignette looks awesome!
I adore using free items from nature to decorate! The candles look great. Can you believe stores want you to actually buy wax candles that only look like birch branches?!? I think the real thing is so much cooler!
Sarah
