I love the look of vintage globes.
The colors! I love the colors!
And they're round. Who doesn't like round?
Plus, they spin.
I found this one in a thrift store. It was just a few dollars. I saw one identical to this on Etsy for $25.
It used to go in a school, so it has some fun features. It spins and tilts! I thought it could be fun to decorate with, once I bought it a few friends.
I had something like this in mind.
Or this
Elle Decor October 2006
Or this
Metropolitan Home October 2006
But I realized something when I got my little replica of the world home.
Globes take up a lot of room!
Really a lot.
Like, almost as much room as a person. A short rotund person. (So maybe a 3 year old person who really digs the Twinkies. And who never moves. Collect 10-12 of these babies, and you've got yourself a very stationary preschool class.)
I know there are smaller ones. I've seen them in photos. But not in real life. So I don't think I'll be collecting them. I'll be stopping with one.
This one will go in my son's room.
If he wants more later, he can get more later.
When he has his own place.
When he has his own place.
Thanks for reading!

too funny!!! because i bought one and brought it home for my son's room and thought the same thing.... man it takes a lot of space! :) but yes, they are round and they spin, so what is not to love!
you are amazing..your sense of style and how you write...I have several small ones and about 12 in my collection..somewhere I have a list of what year the globe was made as so many names have changed..eg Ceylon to Sr Lanka.....what a great photo to show the top of the globe!

You know what is funny? I NEVER see the big ones but see tons of small ones! Yours is gorgeous! Did you check out all the re-named countries on it? Great for the boy's room! xxoo Diana ps...Would you like to order some Skin-So-Soft while I'm here?;>) just askin....
I know what you mean! My husband has been talking about globes for years... his grandma once gave him one. So finally, I found one similar (it had to be the kind with ridges for mountains) and I too was surprised at how big it is... where to put it? Fortunately I had a bookcase that has just enough space. Of course, then I found an adorable little one at a local estate sale that was given out by our local newspaper back in the 60's. Had to get that one too... I think I'm on my way to creating that preschool class :)

I love those globes too, we got two the other day for free, we keep them in our library, I guess we are starting a collection here.
Have a great day, thanks for sharing!

I have several of these, and since they DO take up a bit of real estate, I have them with my vintage suitcases way up high on those stupid shelves that are pointless unless you have somehthing really cool to show off (or you need to hide food storage:D )
I even have one that is written in Korean!
wonderful nostalgia! yes, having a collection would be great, but one is just grand! Perfect for his room too :)
Your post really made me smile! I also discovered once that globes (even only one...) are too large for my apartment ;-)
I love the look of a globe amidst dusty piles of books and maps. It just makes me think "scholarly" and "travel". I'll bet it inspires some BIG dreams in your son!
Oh, she is a beauty! I was lucky to find one last year for $13 and it happened to be from the year of my kindergarten class. I found one later in the summer for my Kate in earth tone colors, again $13!
I want one!
Love your inspiration photos!!
Bah! A 3yr old that digs twinkies! God that made me laugh. I always love the collections of globes. But I would have no room for them either. You got a great deal on that one though.
oooo... i love globes! i have a collection of...3... is that a collection?!!! i love yours on the bench with the wire basket! : )
Hi Suzanne: I've got this linked to my globes and maps post today, thank you for putting this together.
