A Scarlett O'Hara Kind of Project

You might remember these doors
that came off this cabinet
that became this cabinet?
Well. They were just cluttering up the garage. It was time to either throw them away or do something with them.
(Wouldn't it be funny if I just said I threw them away and ended this post? OK. Maybe not. But I'm still kind of snickering.)
So I took out those plastic inserts, painted the doors, stapled some chicken wire inside the doors,
hinged them together,
and made this.
Sounds simple, right?
No.
The chicken wire came from the float, so it was  a little bent out of shape. By the time I was done stapling it, so was I. Bent out of shape, I mean. And covered with scratches.
Seriously, I kind of wish I'd used hardware cloth. It would have gone on nicer. But, I had the chicken wire so I used it. Also, I really needed 4 hands for this. Or maybe 6. Having only the two, I got a little frustrated.
(As God is my witness, I will NEVER work with chicken wire again!)
Hence the lack of pictures of my work as I went along. I was too busy being disgruntled.
I made little hooks out of fencing wire. That part was fun.
I don't have everything hanging on it yet, but you get the idea.

Have you ever worked with chicken wire? Do you despise it too?

Thanks for reading!

It looks great, though! What a good idea! Now, I want to use chicken wire to put in a picture frame for a similar effect. Thanks for the inspiration:)
I've only used it around a garden...I think I remember getting scratched up in that process. It was a couple years ago, so I guess I'm ready to take it on again :)

it looks awesome! i love the look of chicken wire. and i hate working with it... i have used it on cabinets and to create organizers like yours, and always end up stabbing and scratching myself. but the final product is always great!

Hey "Scarlet",
I love it! I love chicken wire and rusty hinges... Love the way it came together. I myself am a chicken wire fan... If you want a good laugh today check out my post when I tried painting chicken wire in the snow!

Yes! I do despise it! And I only used a little piece to make a heart on that mirror. I ended up giving the rest of the roll to my neighbors because I sure as heck ain't taking on any more projects with it.

I love how you repurposed everything on the cabinet. Even though it is a pain, it does look super cute AND useful!

Funny thing you say that...I've seen so many nice chicken wire projects, and I remember trying to work with it and actually throwing it out cause I had so much trouble. I've always wanted to give it another go, but I dunno~!
So yeah, count me in on the 'despise chicken wire' club!

Hey that's a great idea. I used to have chickens so I am sure I can scrounge up some wire for something similar.

Great idea! The chicken wire looks way better than the hardware cloth would have looked anyways! It was worth the struggle! :)

Dear Scarlett,
This door look fantastic now that you are done..I made a basket out of chicken wire with deer horn shed antlers for handles..I still love it 15 years later...know how you feel about the scratches though! It probably looked like you got into a fight with a cat!

I HAVE worked with it. It coils, then it recoils, and it bites and bites some more!

I will use it again, soon. I have a project in mind. I dread it.

your project looks fabulous!

I haven't worked with chicken wire so far and doubt, if I ever will, reading your description ;-) However, the result is gorgeous, which then is tempting again...! :-)

I love that Suzanne! and no, can't relate, I've never attempted to work with chicken wire. but I will absolutely take your word for it and in ALL future endeavors will select hardware cloth if the opportunity presents itself.

You are so creative with those cabinet doors and I almost started laughing too when you said one of the options was to toss them out. I was thinking - uh, no, not an option. :)

I DO hate working with chicken wire! The last time I used it I also vowed to never do it again. But I probably will because I had some left over. Sigh.

YES! I used it on my window frame memo board and it was a pain. I bought mine at GW and it was bent out of shape too. But what a great idea to use those doors. I have some in the garage also but not that big. I need to do something with them soon.

cute! I used chicken wire once and hated every second of the project. My husband came to help and we both just gave up after a few minutes!
