Make It Merry!

This is long, but I hope you'll read it anyway.
When I found out what my topic was for the Make it Merry celebration, I have to admit that it gave me something to think about.
Christmas Magic.
Christmas hasn't been magic for me in a long time. Not since I was a child, if I'm going to be completely honest. What was so magic about it then? Why isn't it now?
What I loved the most about Christmas when I was a child was going to my grandparents house for dinner, and all the family parties before Christmas.
Of course there was that one special present I wanted with all my heart, but there wasn't a huge list of things that I wanted. My parents may remember that differently. But when I was small, presents were only part of the magic.
I loved the Christmas decorations, but none of them were elaborate or expensive. The ones I loved the most had special meaning for me. My favorite ornament for the tree was one my mother had made. In fact, I wish I had it now.
I loved taking plates of cookies to the neighbors. And they were just sugar cookies that we'd all decorated. None of them were perfect; far from it. But it was a joy to give them to people.

Christmas was more simple when I was a child.
I think at age 6, I had my priorities more in line than I do now.
Maybe that's why it's not so magic now.

I was still thinking about this one day while I was standing in line at the grocery store with my son. I made the comment that I wished we could go back to a simpler Christmas. A more old fashioned celebration. One where the emphasis was on on the meaning of Christmas, getting together and enjoying a meal, and maybe opening one present. My son shocked me when he said "I'd be so OK with that, Mom. I have to wrack my brain for things to put on my Christmas list anyway."
Hello? This, from a teenager?
So my husband and I changed our priorities. We're cutting back. Not because we're feeling Scrooge-ish. Although even people who are fully employed are feeling a financial pinch these days. I know we are. I truly feel for those who are unemployed.
So cutting back will benefit our bank account. But mainly, it's a way for us to try to get some of that magic back.
We just want to enjoy Christmas.
It might be hard. I tend to over-think things. To worry and what if. Even for this post. So simplifying Christmas could be a challenge. But I'm going to give it my best shot.
Today I'm going to show you a few things I did that cost next to nothing, and really didn't take much time at all.
My dad dug this brass bell out of his garden. It had been there awhile. It originally was fastened to a harness used on work horses. The interesting thing is, my dad's grandfather did a lot of excavation work in the part of town where my parents live, and he used workhorses. It was a long time ago, and it's a stretch, but this bell might have come off one of my great grandfather's harnesses.
I wired it to a old bit that I found on our farm. It was used for work horses, too. Horses that pulled the farm machinery for my husband's grandfather.
Then I just added greenery. I hung it on our front door and the bell rings whenever the door opens and closes. I love the sound and I love that there's a history behind it, too. To me, that's magic.
I got this idea from a picture I saw a long time ago. I can't remember where.
When I was young, little things like this fascinated me.
I already had the lantern, so I just cut a circle out of card stock to hold everything inside.
I hot glued the vintage bottlebrush trees and the small deer to the card stock, and placed it all inside.
Then I just added epsom salts for the snow.
I smile every time I see it.

I know a lot of you might not have old brass bells and lanterns laying around.
But what do you have?

What can you do with it?

How can you make it a little bit magic?

Oh I just love the idea of that beautiful bell having once belonged to your great grandfather. You have inspired me to put trees and a deer in an old bubblegum dispenser.

wow- i need to check out all these posts and am bookmarking this post. suzanne- i absolutely love the decor you created- teh lantern is AMAZING. i have been doing similar with jars for teacher gifts this year.
i also appreciate the sentiment and have done the same this year. i needed to cut back on the spending anyhow, and i wanted my kids to appreciate all the magic of the season. and i think that this will be their best christmas yet because they are having so much fun getting in on making gifts for people we care about.

I have a shelf of vintage lanternss. What a clever idea! Love it! I am tired of hauling boxes out of the attic and banging my head on nails, so I'm trying to use more of what I already have downstairs to decorate for Christmas this year. Thanks for the great ideas!

You captured me this morning! I bought a book last year after Christmas called the 100 dollar Christmas. It didn't say that you can only spend a hundred dollars but it spoke of what's most important about Christmas. It's not the number of presents you buy someone or how elaborate your decorations are. It's Christ...it's family...it's time together. I have been praying that I would be able to cut back and scale down. I need God's help with it because it has become such a habit to "overdo". Does that make sense? I love what your teenager said because mine have said similiar things.

Thank you so much for sharing your heart this morning. I want that same magic back from my childhood as well. I hope I am on the right path. I have chosen to limit my over the top Christmas decorating. We are enjoying a simpler yet, I believe, still beautiful Christmas in our home. Nature has come inside and we all love it. There will be a few less gifts under the tree this year, but I hope everyone will know that the ones chosen for them are filled with love and much thought.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and your beautiful found bell. Sorry for the long comment back...God bless you.

I love your lantern... never thought of using one this way! And of course, the sound of a jingle-y bell every time the door opens... love it too!

I understand what you mean about the Christmas magic... I remember times as a child similar to yours. I must say though, I felt the magic when my kids were small as well and even as they got older. There's always something about the traditions of the holidays that makes me feel that way. Of course, it also means some of the traditions have to change... which I do miss.

Great post that really got me thinking!
Enjoy your week off...

Loved this post. I couldn't agree more that it seems each year it is so easy to get caught up in all the hype. I too have scaled back a lot this year. And not surprisingly, I'm happier!

It's the simple things we enjoy the most so why not even more during Christmas time. Well said, Suzanne!

I remember as a kid little things like the deer and the trees fascinated me too. I bought the boys a nativity scene with tiny people just for that very reason. They love it and I was able to explain that very special night to them using these little people.

Great post Suzanne! Simple and scaling back is always my plan too, but sometimes it gets derailed! However this year with our job change and some pending concerns about selling our house and moving "simple" is the only option! I have really scaled everything back and it feels good! Thanks for the inspiration and have a wonderful time away!

That was a very beautiful post! We've cut back too, and it's not because of the money - we're spending much more time doing family things and visiting with friends. Oh I also loved your lantern and I have one too, I might just see if I can take it apart (tee hee hee)

Oh...do I have lanterns laying around. I have about 15 at last count. My husband's got a little obsession going on. In fact, I just found a little lantern ornament I bought to comemorrate his obsession. One of the lanterns isn't working, so I think I'll convert that. Thanks for the idea. I love the bell and your lantern.

They're both beautiful. I love the story with the bell!
I have an old white lantern...no glass though. I sure would love to make something similar. I think I'll go scrouge around in my garage!!
Thank you for sharing your creations.

Very Inspiring, Suzanne. I've noticed every year more and more of my family and friends are saying, no presents, lets just get together....It really makes christmas less stressful.
I love your lantern idea. It looks so vintage and pretty.

What a wonderful and honest post, Suzanne! I think that there have been many years where the Magic was gone for me...when it was all about WHAT to get for THIS person or THAT person. It got lost in the rush and then packages were ripped open in a moment's time and all the treasures were barely acknowledged in the haste to get to the NEXT BEST present.

We are with you this year. Our whole family decided to cut WAY back. Too much is too much. We are getting back to the wonderful traditions and customs and letting go of so many costly gifts. We are trying to return to the Reason For The Season.

Thank you for this wonderful post. I don't know where you are going but I hope you have a wonderful time! xo Diana

Oh my goodness! I think your wonderful. Yes! Christmas can be and should be simplified and recognized more for it's true meaning, the true gift to all of us. I just want to hug you. With your words you have given all of us a gift, the gift of making us stop and realize that we need to get back to the slower times of yesteryear. When trimming the tree was a family tradition, not one more thing to get done. (convicted) Now, about that adorable lantern...my teenage daughter was lurking over my shoulder when I was reading your post and we both went ga.ga over the pure sweetness of the little deer in the snow. It's just perfect.

I love this post Suzanne. I was thinking about this myself recently. My thought was that when we turn Christmas into a "do-do-do" mess of stress and worry that we don't have the chance to experience any of the magic anymore. To often, we put such high expectations on ourselves and everyone else, that nothing can live up to it, and we make ourselves crazy trying to reach that goal. This year, I'm trying really hard to make the little things count, and keep the love and thoughtfulness in the season.

I love your decorations. I literally gasped when I saw the lantern. So gorgeous! And such a lovely story behind your "doorbell".

Vickie @ Ranger 911 said...

I love your old bell hanging on the door. I have a cheapo set of sleigh bells I bought at Kmart years ago, but my kids grew up with it jingling every time the door opened during the holiday season, so for me it has sentimental meaning.

Your little lantern is so charming!

Lovely post. Like my daughter's were telling me, Less is MORE!

As I was going though my Christmas "stuff" this year, I was vaguely dissatisfied with some of it. Many decorations were things that my mom gave to me just because they were 'extra,' and they didn't really have any personal meaning to me. I took several things to DI. And even some of what I put out--seems more like "filler" than things I really have an attachment to. An exception is a ceramic Christmas tree that was in my house all through my childhood, or a Nativity that, while new--is something I chose for myself because I really love it. I have the desire to take my home decorating back to things that are meaningful, and away from pre-packaged glitz. Does that make any sense? I hope so. I guess I want my Christmas magic to come less from glitter (although glitter is good!) and more from the heart.

Came from Cindi..Rustique Art..reading every one's post for each day. Your post was so true...where has the magic gone. I want to go back to when I was a child too. As we grow older, we tend to get more cynical, I think. Loved the bell story and the lantern. There's one hanging in the cellar, may look at that differently now!!!! Thanks,

Lois

I absolutely love the bell you put together! It's just perfect. I too wish we could go back to simpler times. Not just for Christmas either! You little lantern is adorable. You have the neatest stuff girlie!

With every passing year, I try to make Christmas more simple. We try to make at least half of our gifts, and I hope one day that we will make almost all of them. I am very blessed that my husband is a woodworker.
My baby girl gets three gifts at Christmas - just like baby Jesus. That really helps keep things from going overboard. My husband and I keep it short with our list too - three small things. It's nice. Now, if we could get the rest of our family on board! :-)
Great post....I enjoy everything you write.

Seriously struggling with Christmas magic this year with all I have going on, yet because we've needed to simplify out of necessity, I've found a few magical moments surprising me...walking into the living room and seeing my white tree all glowy...hearing Michael Buble singing my favorite Christmas standars....putting up the wooden manger scene my aunt made years ago.

We're also not spending much as everyone is strapped this year. We only buy something we know will be appreciated and meaningful.

Beautiful post, beautiful meaningful crafts. Great Suzanne. Really wonderful.

I love your magic - makes tears come to my eyes, honest to goodness! There are times that I have to remind myself that the gift of this day, is the day itself. I have to choose to live in this precise moment and humbly give thanks. You help me to find magic all the time Suzanne. xo, diane
ps - there's no reason not to believe the bell didn't belong to your great-grandfather's horse. That is so awesome!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, as well as your project. My husband has an old lantern that was his father's which I have never been fond of. I see a makeover in that brass lantern's future!

There are a couple of ideas that have really hit me for simplifying Christmas. First, we are going to get each person 4 presents - something they need, something they want, something to wear, something to read (or something educational for my pre-readers). I read about a really cool app called "Free2Work." You can scan barcodes in a store and find out if that product is made responsibly, or if the manufacturer utilizes slave labor in their production. Second, we are going to give each child a final gift - a gift of cash. They can use this gift to bless someone else. I think they will be particularly excited to choose something out of the World Vision catalog or off the www.chickensandgoats.com website. I think choosing an animal for an indigent family will especially appeal to them. (They are 2, 4, 7.) Some other options could be the local food bank, or local women/children's shelter. They can choose whatever appeals most to them!

I found that this blog post helped me put into words some of my thoughts: http://jenhatmaker.com/blog/2011/11/29/the-christmas-conundrum. She includes many links for buying gifts with conscience. There are many more links shared in the comment section. I think it is beneficial, even for those who are not Christians.

we're on the same page Suzanne. I'm not even shopping this year, everything is going to be gifts made by me, or help with a household reno. I'm tired of it being about shopping. So done with that!
Love your decorations, so cute and simple too.
