You might be wondering what's happened to the vintage bed I was painting.
(But really, why paint it? It's such a gorgeous color! No, I'm not serious.)
I was serious about painting it, though. I wore a mask and everything.
I primed it with this stuff, which I like. I'd never used it before, but I will be using it again. Not one splatter out of that nozzle.
It took two cans of primer. I kind of liked the gray at this point. But it wasn't the color my son chose. So I got busy painting. 3 coats of paint.
(I LOVE the paint color, but I'm holding off on showing that.
I'm still hoping for a fun "after" photo)
When it was all ready to move in the house, my spatially gifted husband said "It looks kind of short." Short? SHORT?!!?
It is short. 4 inches shorter than the mattress. Too short for a boy who's 6'1".
So we devised a plan that involved welding.
(Lucky me! My husband has a welder and he knows how to use it.
Gotta love those farm boys!)
Then this happened.

that is such a bummer, but it will look awesome and be worth the wait- i know it!
I bet with a little help you could FORCE the mattress and boxspring into that slightly smaller opening. :@ I know that's what I'd be doing, since we don't have a welder on site. Not that you'd be so foolish, but do not try to cut the boxspring with a sawzall. I've tried (with our neighbors watching) and it doesn't work. And there are those spaces between the spindles where your son could let his feet dangle over the edge.
That sounds like something I would do-LOL!!! We do have a vintage bed but it does fit a twin mattress. We gave the other matching one to our youngest daughter and she will be using for our grandson, Owen when he goes from the crib to the bed. Kevin our son-in-law painted it a lovely gray color. The one we have is cream. They are really great beds! Good luck with yours. I also love the photo of the field with snow on it-very pretty!
aww don't ya just love mother nature's sense of humor?! ;)
Aww, you can't fool me! Since your husband *does* know how to weld, you would've bought it anyway! It will be worth the wait, I'm sure ;-)
Oh, man! But thank goodness for yall's can-fix-it attitude! That color better be cool 'cause I really liked the orange. And I AM serious! LOL.
uh oh! I knew they are not always as wide as nowadays, but I didn't realize they were shorter! ;)
Can't wait to see the fun "after" pic!
good luck to the hubs, (be safe!)

ps I wish I had a good ole farmboy! Lucky YOU!
Wow, I knew that some old beds were smaller in size than today's beds but I didn't know that they could be SHORTER! At least you have an "in house" fix! Can't wait to see the finished color...

PS I think we need to get out to our barn and measure our old bed before I do anything with it....
Have your husband cut the bed rails and add angle iron, then grind down smooth. That is what my husband did and it worked wonderfully. We even made it a tad longer to make sure the comforter would slide between mattress and bed frame easily. My family laughs at us because we are still sleeping on a full size mattress, but it is the first bed that my Grandparents had when they got married and the only bed have ever had. I wish he could widen the bed. Just haven't figured out how without ruining the bed :(
Good luck!
Something I would totally do too! Glad you have a solution... me? I'd have to add it to the donate pice as my hubby doesn't weld....
I have been there, done that. But, just think of the story that now goes along with the bed. Great tale.
Oh- I hate when that kind of thing happens. It sounds to me like one of the old "youth beds" of that era. We had one that belonged to my hubby's family. It was red and I wish I had it today. I had to have foam cut for it to use for a mattress..two pieces actually. Can't wait to see it done. Gotta tell you-I kinda like the gray, too.
If you have a second pop over to my blog today because I KNOW you will be laughing when you leave! Love ya, kiddo! xo
ps...And your son can't sleep in it as is (in the fetal position) because??????
Yippie!! Welding!!!...(I would freak out and the project would come to a SCREEEEECHING halt.) So surprised you chose to paint it. The "before" color was completely charming in a 1982 kinda way. I can just picture it in an issue of Country Living with some gold bedding and tole painted accents.
Also....LOVED your post about the box spring make-over. I have thought about breaking up with my current bed skirt but didn't want it to be for all the wrong reasons...(it's not you it's me...we can still be friends...)I think before I do that I need to buy a super duper Arrow StapleGun 5000 Mega watt stapler. Made it look a bunch easier.
And.....finally (are you still reading?) I major LOVED your post on THINK! I couldn't agree more. You hit the nail right on the head!!!
You're the best,
Beth
Yelp! My dad has his parents iron bed and he said I would have to have a custom mattress made for it. Such a bummer!
Oh bugger, they were smaller back in the day...my son is also over 6' and he outgrew his bunk bed in high school and it was not vintage!
Yikes! But at least you have a solution in mind. It will just be all the more special when it all comes together! Good luck Suzanne!
Heh, I bought a bed like that at a yard sale, and the owner said I had to take the old springs with it. I didn't really want them, but took them anyway. Good thing, because my box springs didn't fit. I had to use the old springs with my mattress. And you'd think I'd know better that to do something like that again, but I just bought a wooden bed frame at the thrift store only to get it home and realize it's missing one of the metal parts to connect the side rail to the head board. Doh. I'm working on screwing them together.
Can't wait to see what color you paint the bed.
Is it a full size bed? They are shorter. My son is 6'2" also and he needs the length of a queen. Glad you are able to rig it up to work. I love the bed!
