Cubby Madness Progress

This is the most important thing to have when you're building something.
A mascot. I firmly believe that the right mascot, along with a lot of caution, will keep all your fingers attached. Plus, I always thought he was the most masculine little people in the set.
So.
Here is what I have completed thus far.
I'm using the plans I found on Ana-White.com
They're easy to follow.
The main thing with this project is to make sure your cuts are straight and that you have good wood glue. That's what she stressed and I believe her.
(I wasn't thrilled about the wood glue part. I wanted the whole thing screwed together. But that's not really possible. And besides, I'm pretty sure Pottery Barn glues their cubbies.)
I did find a shortcut to all the measuring. The upright part of the cubbies need to be spaced 5 1/2 inches apart. Guess what? A 1"x6" board is really 5 1/2 inches wide.
 They make perfect spacers!
 So you just glue
 make sure it's all square
and since I don't have clamps big enough for this, I just placed another board on top (no glue) and used weights.
I hope to have it all put together today, and painted. That might not happen since I have jury duty

Does this look like something you'd try? It's really not as hard as I thought it would be.

Thanks for reading!

Wow, Good Job, Suzanne! Can you screw AND glue, or not? I'm always just a little afraid of using just glue, too. Can't wait to see it done...hoping you don't get selected for jury duty today- xo Diana

Are you going with just glue or some type of fastener, too? Love your little mascot, too funny! Hope jury duty selection doesn't drag on like it did for me.(I had jury duty the week before Christmas.) Can't wait to see your cubbies all decked out.

I love the contractor, I mean mascot, you have there!

And I know it's hard to believe but gluing is the way to go... most of the time when you see some one use a small nail on a project that's just to hold it until the glue has dried, the wood glue is much stronger... doesn't seem right but it is!

Cannot wait to see the finished project!

cool! :) I would probably shoot some brad nails with my nailer to help it set up. Great job with the weights!
Gorilla Wood Glue is the best glue. ;)

can't wait to see the end result!
Jury Duty? I've only had it once, and I actually enjoyed seeing the judicial process.

We (well, I mean my husband, who has worked with wood for a long, long time) used wood glue and screws. He says they need to be used together. He offsets the outside screws and putties over them, sands them and you don't even know they are there.

( other than you are a lovely new friend)

How fantastic, Suzanne! I definitely wouldn't dare to try this - even if I had such a cute mascot! ;-)

Good job. I agree...you need a mascot...sometimes mine is my yorkie who loves to hang with me in his sling. I'm all about the shortcuts. I'm kind of a puzzle person and I always try to figure the easiest way to do things. Your weights look so familiar. I have to use weights or cans of screws to weight things down. It reminds me I should have asked for clamps from Santa.
Hope to show more of my home reno projects this year....i love to saw and use the nail gun too....:)

I would still be putting some type of additional fastener in there...I just don't trust glue that much.

Cubbies are lookin good! I would probably worry about just using glue too but it's not like you are gonna use it as a step stool when you're done right? Ha! Love your mascot, must get me one. Me I just blare the tunes and sing along while I work ;) (my neighbors love it I'm sure)

I love cubbies. Can't wait to see how yours turn out. I think I need to have Jake make me some...because of the whole scary saw part.
Happy New Year, Suzanne!

It's the straight cuts part that throws me off. Our table saw is in the COLD garage, so I may have to try making one when the weather warms up. I'm anxious to see how yours turns out.

Ha, ha! I just read the comment above mine and I have to agree with Emily about "Scary saws". :@
