How I was afraid they'd turn out.
How they really turned out.
They could be better.
But only if someone else had made them.
I honestly did the best I could.
They were a lot of work, and I wish I liked them more.
I am SO over this project!
Did you see the mistake(s)
I made with the numbers?
I should have started them one shelf lower. I'm sure I'll fix it. Just not now. When I do, the I won't put the ovals around them. I'll just make the numbers bigger. I'll also be sure to add 9 and 10.
See that number 14? If I had the numbers 1 through 25, I'd use those. They're much cuter than my painted numbers.

But they only come in these numbers.
Dangit.
Mr. Holtz is missing out on some big money. Bloggers everywhere would be buying those and applying them to all sorts of things if they came in consecutive numbers.
I could have made more of these
but I couldn't find any more plain chipboard ones that would fit.
One thing is certain~I won't be making another one!
However, if you want to make one, here is the link for the plans. Her instructions are very clear~all the mistakes in this project are due to my limited skills.
Now.
On to the next project.
This bed! Hopefully, it will be more fun than the shelves were.
Thanks for reading!

Hi Suzanne,
I'm sure the mistakes are more evident right now because you are fresh off the project. Once you have some time from it and have a few other projects in between, I'm sure they will not seem so obvious to you and you will see what the rest of us see, a lovely shelf. I think you did a fantastic job, especially for this being your first time. There's a lot of detail in this. Be proud of your accomplishment and let time soften the mistakes for you. Way to Go!
It´s really nice!! i´m jealous wish I had one !! - and I think you´re being to hard on your self :) but i´m exactly the same so I completely understand ;)
we are our worst critics, aren't we? because i love it and think it is pretty awesome and if i made it and showed it on my blog you would love it, too. :)
and i cannot wait to see the bed!!!
It looks great! Don't be so hard on yourself!! You did a fabulous job!! Impressive!!
Suzanne it's still perfectly imperfect. Honestly I didn't notice the numbers on the wrong rows until you pointed it out. You still did an awesome job because that's a lot of corners to square up and toe in.
leave perfection for manufactured items! :) I love your cubby! I think you did a fabulous job.

ps my sis just told me last week she has my mom's brownie for me to give to jamie! I should have kept it a secret from jamie, but when I spoke to her on the phone, I blabbed all about ! hahaha
WHO SAYS the numbers have to be on the bottom?? You're the only one I know ;-) Gail's right--leave perfection for the manufactured pieces. Yours has CHARACTER!
Again I think it looks awesome...so your style! You're doing it right: Just walk.away.from.the.shelf.project. :)
I love it and can think of a myriad of places in my home that it would look great in! But I know what you mean and I agree with others before me here that WE are definitely the hardest on ourselves!!
And that bed, I'm waiting to see what you have in store for us :)

Just re -read your title....where vintage and diy collide. Would you say they collided on your project? I almost always do not like what I make when it's done. I think we know where all the mistakes are and they stick out. I am the kind that needs affirmation I guess. I feel that way about every post. I tweak and tweak. I really overthink things and don't know when to quit. I think especially in blogdom we see a lot of amazing stuff so we feel we should always put an asterisk by our diy posts or downgrade a bit. I find that the longer the project takes, for any reason, the more we think it stinks and sweep it under the rug. I did that yesterday when I completed a dog crate cover....I was stressed about making it to the post office before 5:00 ... I could have waited til the next day to mail it ... but I just wanted it out of the house. When it was mailed I ran home and cleaned everything up and vacuumed. I think it was to remove all thoughts and doubts about my project and move on to the next thing. I really think it looked good ... as the days pass ... but at the time it was enough.
Sorry about the length....I do tend to ramble:)
OMG ... by the way... I forgot...really truly it looks marvelous. Vintage. BTW what kind of idiot company makes number kits and only sells random numbers?
Oh, I LOVE this post, Suzanne! You must admit from what you thought the result would be it's definitely a masterpiece. And I think so even without comparing it to your drawing! This is amazing!!! I didn't see your mistakes and it doesn't bother me at all, by the way!
Now I can't wait to see what you're up to with that bed!
Are you kidding me? This came out gorgeous! You know you'd be commenting to anyone else how fabulous it came out!!!!
Great job Suzanne! I think it is great!
Susan
You are too hard on yourself! I love it and think you did an amazing job!!
Seriously, woman, you're so talented! Oh AND over critical of yourself. I think it looks great. Ok, so it looks great but do you want to hear the good part if you revisit it and do the changes you want later? You have another post!! See bright side to everything! :) I REALLY like it.
really nice job - honest. You are the only one who is aware of the things you would change. I do not have the personal fortitude to undertake a challenge like that construction project. Your cubbies are adorable!
I love it! if I wasn't chasing 3 kids from 7 to one and a half year old around I would love to try douing this onmy I nee a narrow and tall shelf. My wheels are spinning. I saw a post long ago to make your own french enamel tahs and it looks easy enough. Thought I'd send you the link! http://inmyownstyle.com/2010/07/how-to-make-french-enameled-numbered-tags.html
Cheers!
Jennifer
Sorry for all the typos somehow my computer wasn't playing nice :)
Your cubbies turned out super! Don't fret about the numbers.....I painted a VERY large clock face with 2 #11's....Roman Numerals kick my butt every time!
Okay, just being honest...you're right on all points about the numbers. They need to be redone. Perhaps you could paint over Mr. Holtz's tags maybe even using your faux metal tag technique? Now about the actual cubby...it reminds me of handcrafted work that looks so much better than mass produced stuff. Mass produced is often perfect but lacks character while handcrafted often isn't perfect but that's what gives it character. I think once you are happy with the numbers, you'll love it. If not, ship it my way! I'll pay for the shipping. I LOVE it!
I'm working my way backwards on your posts to catch up, so I've already seen your final version. This one is nice, but you did really nail it with those number tacks you ended up with.
You gotta feel great about this now, right?
And remember the old Irish saying, "the man galloping by on horseback will never notice". That's saved me from a lot of fretting over the years!
